Lusting After Liabilities

“Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly” Baz Luhrmann mentioned in his awesome song “Everybody’s Free”.
I say, “Do NOT read fashion magazines, they will only make you broke”. Most of the things I buy, I lusted after them at first sight in their printed media form. Call it targeted shopping for me but magazines do a fine job of preying on the purses of women.

Here are 2 items that I would so like to get my hands on currently:

1. Piaget’s Possession Pendant (in Yellow Gold with an Emerald): Price Unavailable

2. Kate Spade Book of the Month Clutch (The Great Gatsby): $385 USD/ $650 SGD
Made of silk twill and leather, this one exudes a vintage, nerdish yet chic vibe.

Much as I have a weakness for beautiful things, I have enough discipline not to cave to such worldly desires—till I have some excess cash for them.

Prancing in Prada-licious Lace

I always thought lace makes mature ladies out of girls. Sometimes they are too tacky, other times they are plain grandma-ish.

But when I set my eyes on Miuccia Prada's Fall Collection, I grasped. My attention was riveted. How can something be so beautifully elegant when it's see through?

It's worthy of a classic.
Thing is I don't think I can afford to own/ willing to splurge on this. I am sure lace is going to take this season by storm and soon, mere mortals with a modest pay check can own a respectably pretty lace dress too!

The Punk in Me!

Was deliberating over this hoodie at Hard Rock cafe (San Diego) on my last visit. Decided to take my food first to prevent another impluse buy. The Apple Crumble at Hard Rock is really yummy! It was a satisfying meal. So, did I purchase the hoodie in the end?

Ah, the punk in me said yes and followed me home it did! ;-)

Take a Coach from US

Aileen and I always thought the Coach is a dowdy brand, usually for the aunties. But Nana just makes it so cool that I am caving in.
Can anyone tell me which one is nice?

Holiday Patchwork Gallery Tote

Fall Patchwork Carly (Exotic Skin)

Fall Patchwork Gallery Tote (Exotic Skin)

I just thought that a design that's not from their classic signature range will look more unique. But Nana, I love your Ergo's choice. No no, I cannot be tempted further! >.<

Stuck in CT-Stamford

Fate has it that I will not be heading to NY for this trip. A little too tight and there are just too many things to wrap up. A half day trip there would defeat the purpose of trying to squeeze in a little breather for the week. So no, I will be taking a road trip several years down the road to cover some part of the US of A at my own leisure.

The comforting thing is that I finally get to TRY on my Forever 21 clothes instead of ordering them over the internet and adopting the 'keep my fingers crossed' approach to online shopping. Here are 3 pieces I bought:
1. Chiffon Cocktail Dress (I bought the Cream coloured version which exudes a Grecian feel)
2. Cheetah Halter Dress (a little outrageous I know, will figure out how to keep the level of exposure to a minimum)
3. The Brilliant Buy (Uptown Sleeveless Chiffon Dress @ 10.50 USD)

Queen of Style (continuation of the previous post)

The undisputed queen of style is called Voodoomary (nickname).

Link: Voodoomary's Style Diary

I love gawking (yes, it's really a mouth agape look) at whatever she's wearing. Her style is to be worshipped. Her collection--well, let's just say, it can rival Hollywood celebrity standards.
A very tall classy lady with unlimited cash to look fabulous. A modern age tai-tai with an equally stylish husband who brings her out to nice places on dinner dates. Crap. I think I sound so enviously materialistic when I pen down these descriptions.

Oh bother, just shoot me but I seriously desire for such a lifestyle too. Hm...in a couple of years I guess. And casual weekends could be spent karting with the tot in tow. (tsk tsk...)

I wish she can take shots of herself with face included though. I half suspect that she doesn't need to turn up for work on time. What a luxury! And has all the time during office hours to post these shots on multiple web fashion forums. Cool! Self employed perhaps. Way to go. =P

Have your 'Kate' and wear it too

Nothing in particular to write about for today. When I say nothing in particular, it means nothing of much consequence. True, I do have some unpublished entries stored in my computer but I always wait for a good time before posting them up.

So here, my take on the Kate Moss collection for TopShop.
I think it’s mighty fine. Somewhat it’s very modern and chic. But luckily, there's no Ed Hardy edginess included. The vest featured in the picture above--it's the 'IT' item of the moment. Get one now. It'll last for many many fashion cycles. Take it from me.
I like the good mix of masculine elements in the form of vests and smart shirts and the collection of feminine pieces very much.
One thing though. Kate Moss is seriously too ‘waif-ish’ for my liking.

Alright, give her some credit.

Back to Basics

I mentioned in a previous entry about being an experimental dresser. Yep, sometimes I do don on a freaking weird ensemble. On good days, I can go from Gwen Stefani’s cool, Nicole Kidman’s chic, Sarah Jessica Parker’s whimsical, Avril Lavigne’s punk, Jennifer Aniston’s casual to Jessica Alba’s sexy.

Of course, the ability to capture celebrity styles is a simple case of monkey mirroring. At the end of the day however, my personal style is a deeply entrenched classic lady look. That means sweet dresses that keep the skin under wraps. Yes, when I was 20, it does seem a little too early to be looking like a Stepford wife. But now, the time is ripe for me to return to what ‘Ivy’ truly looks like. Well, at least, for my sane days. ;-P

Audrey Hepburn is my style inspiration

I love girly frocks like these!!!

Rainie Yang's strawberry dress screams cute and lady! I want to add it to my collection!

Tatty Devine’s In Singapore!!!

Ok, Tatty Devine’s not a person. It is just an accessories brand.

Some background:
Tatty Devine is famous for unique and quirky accessories, which elevate jewellery to art status. The pair behind it all, Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden, have no formal training as jewellers. They met studying Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art in 1996, and had planned to become artists until Harriet found some bags of leather samples on the way home from the pub one night. The duo made some leather cuffs to sell at Portobello and Spitalfields markets, and Tatty Devine was born!
Vogue magazine soon caught on, as did Browns Focus and Harvey Nichols, and the girls launched their first official collection at London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2001. A headquarters was essential to the operation, and so the Brick Lane space opened in 2001, which has developed into a showroom, workshop, offices and shop.

Anyway, the duo will be in town TODAY! Yes, 12 April 2007, Thursday, Velvet Underground, 8.30pm. till late.

But I didn’t request for invites because I cannot turn up. Pity.

I love their accessories. They are definitely statement pieces without the bling bling, yet, simply so eye catching and worth collecting.
Perhaps, I would be so crazy to start my Tatty Devine’s collection? Aw…I don’t know.

Here’s a sneak preview of their "oh I just gotta have 'em" pieces:

Horse and Carriage Necklace (54 pounds)

Trapeze Necklace (42 pounds)

Music Note Bracelet (45 pounds)

Lady and Dog Brooch (32 pounds)

Roller coaster Necklace (58 pounds)

My personal favourite: Dinosaur Necklace (96 pounds)

I know! It's totally so OTT (over the top). Unfortunately, I fell for the prehistoric relics. So, can anyone tell me whether the WHITE or BLACK dino is nicer? =P

Pulling a fast one

Marc Jacobs may be hailed as a demigod in the fashion industry and women will squeal like excited mice and scurry to lap up his creations every season they hit the stores.

Unfortunately, no one is born with the Midas touch and this time around, Mr. MJ suffers a lapse of judgment.

Look at these bags MJ designed for LV!!!
What are they? Grocery bags? In Singapore, some people refer to them as ‘China man’s bag’ mainly because they are used to lug around stuff you want to hawk in night bazaars/ pasar malams.

Then again, he may be trying to test the brand loyalty of his fans. Wonder how many people will actually part with their hard earned money to buy this bag?
Or is he trying to ingratiate himself with the citizens of Greater China? Maybe LVMH is underpaying him for this assignment.

Sorry MJ, but I don’t think they will like this. Nobody will anyway. The word’s tacky, darling.

A Sweet Deal from Mango?

I recall writing an entry half a year ago about MANGO.

And yes, it’s the time of the year again in Singapore. The MANGO/ MNG SALE!!!
These 3 simple words are enough to send the womenfolk into an excitable frenzy and scurrying at the swiftest possible half-run to the nearest branch.

I think I will give it a miss.

WHAT? I hear some high-pitched exclamations.

Yes, Ma’am. I won’t be joining you.

1. MNG is just so-so as a fashion boutique. Its collections are fine, but they don’t take my breath away.
2. This is one sale whereby if you are 2 steps behind, don’t even think about getting your hands on the item in YOUR SIZE and preferred colour.
3. I don’t buy display pieces. If the sales person cannot find an unworn piece from the boutique storeroom, I won’t buy it. (Unless they trick me it’s the ONE and ONLY piece they carry. As for MNG, it's all mass produced stuff).
4. I can’t buy anything when the shop is brimming with chaotic action and clothes are strewn in an untidy haphazard manner. Don’t get me started on the changing room queues.
5. Clothes are on sale most of the time. I can get a better buy somewhere else and still experience the oh-so-sweet retail therapy shopping brings.

Girls, can anyone enlighten me? WTF about MNG? (What’s the Fuss, alright? I am not swearing…) MNG? NAY.

On a more approving note, I read about some raves of H&M’s Daily Christmas deals.
I have to say, it’s a sweet deal. Dottie from Fashion Nation would like to get her hands on this dress:

And I say, YAY. She has her overseas sources to snag this deal. As for myself, I can only keep this lovely picture as a memento to salivate over. 19.99 Euros, gals!!!

P/S: This week’s Beauty Post is replaced with a Fashion Post.
