Thought of the Day

Just came across this quotation in Forbes:
“People who bite the hand that feeds them usually lick the boot that kicks them.” ~Eric Hoffer
Interesting. Pretty true, don’t cha think?
So, I guess it may be true too if we reverse the saying a little. Bootlickers are often ingrates.

I don’t see the point in bootlicking if you can’t deliver results though. These people have a short shelf life.

that is sooooo true!!! honestly, i don't see the point of bootlicking at all:

1. your boss KNOWS you're kissing his ass (he may be stupid sometimes but not all the time). so he'll shit on you more often, knowing that you'll gobble up his shit willingly (ok gross, but you get my point).

2. your colleagues will despise you. why be a dog when you are human?!

3. and even IF the buttkisser has talent, ppl will still say he made it because of his bootlicking fetish.

see? i rather go unnoticed than to be labeled as a suck up. but its sad how bosses often prefer suckers.

ok i'm crapping here. LOL.

To Jenn: Nah, don't think you're crapping. Makes sense. =)

I guess boot-licking comes in different kinds. While both are not particularly good in their work, the amateur ones rely on their ability to sweet talk their bosses, while the experienced ones volunteer their time after work to do non-work related stuff for their bosses, participate and put in extra time for all company functions (e.g. cross-dressing during D&D:P)etc. Oh, not to forget back-stabbing. I have seen many bootlickers in the second category rise up in the ranks despite average job performances.

Wow, the more experienced ones seem to be able to yield results!!! Wow. I haven't met any yet. Hopefully I will meet not too many in my life. I hate back-stabbers. Or rather, people who drop degrading statments about their co-workers 'casually' to the bosses. HMPH! Crap lah.

Now check this out. I have encountered many occasions whereby if I don't make my immediately supervisor happy (from a social point of view), he will make my people suffer. Because he knows I love my people and that is my soft spot. So if he is not happily pleased by me (from a social point of view), he will give extra work directly to my people so that they can't go home early and get extra stressed up. Amongst many dark dark evil things that can be done within office domain.

So, whenever I "volunteer" myself for a coffee break with my supervisor or lunch or even dinner, I often joke with my people that I am the "human sacrifice" of the day.

It is not that bad once we add a bit of humor in real life.

So I guess there are different circumstances to the so-called "bootlicking" and there are certain grey areas involved.

Office politics is a grim grim environment. And it is not always about you (in my case, my people).

To Wilfrid: Whoa, that's taking office politics to another level. Holding your team of people hostage. Sounds like a 'wonderfully challenging' game of power play. o_0
